It Never Rains in Southern California

Will you tell the folks back home I nearly made it?
Had offers but don’t know which one to take
Please, don’t tell ’em how you found me
Don’t tell ’em how you found me
Gimme a break, gimme a break

On the way back from L.A. We needed a pit stop.  We pulled off at the Eagle Mountain exit.  This is California: there are in n Out burgers and Chevrons on every corner, right?  First things first.  Gas.

Dead gas station
Something’s missing.

Desert Center sign
Looks…. uh… promising?

Must be the exception to the rule.  Let’s drive on to Desert Center. There is probably food and some hi test.

Family Cafe
the local 5 star…
Dead gas station
Tough to pump without hoses.

Or not.

Dead gas pump
How sausage is made. Where do I stick the debit card?

I wonder if this place has Twinkies…

Desert Center Market
Or a Faygo.

Maybe they’re just all closed for the night. Maybe we’ll just find a motel or a rental cabin for the night.

Desert Center Cabins
Plenty of vacancies

[Ed. note: to be “fair,” Desert Center is NOT an abandoned wasteland full of ruin porn.  Or at least not JUST that – Kinda like Detroit. There IS an active Caltrans maintenance depot, after all.]
